Overview

A predator-free island under the supervision of the New Zealand Department of Conservation, Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary draws bird lovers from all corners of the globe. With all introduced pests removed in the early 1990s, the island shelters a diverse population of native species that have struggled to survive or altogether died out on the mainland. In this island sanctuary, many of those species that have become critically endangered enjoy a secure future.

Keep your eyes peeled for the following wildlife: New Zealand robin (toutouwai), Saddleback (tieke) including the endangered South Island Saddleback, Grey Warbler (riroriro), Tui, Bellbird (korimako), Silver Eye (tauhou), New Zealand pigeon (kereru), Fantail (piwakawaka), Maud Island Frog, the Marlborough Green Gecko, and the very rare King Shag.

A chorus of songs from the residents will greet you on arrival at this fascinating Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary, which you will be able to explore for one hour. Climb to the island’s summit using the track that leads up to it, and enjoy commanding views across to Ship Cove. From the Cook Strait Lookout, take in the stunning view to the North Island. The track is dotted with many wooden nestling boxes – you may lift the lid on one of them to peek below at a sleepy little Blue Penguin looking up at the visitor.
