Christchurch to Mount Cook Day Tour

• Christchurch
  The day begins in Christchurch, where the tour departs from the city centre before heading south-west. As the urban landscape gives way to open countryside, the guide provides an introduction to the day ahead while pointing out notable landmarks and regional highlights along the route.
• Canterbury Plains
  Travel continues across the wide-open Canterbury Plains, one of New Zealand’s most important agricultural regions. Vast farmland, braided rivers and distant mountain views define this stretch of the journey, offering a relaxed and scenic start to the day.
• Geraldine (approx. 10 minutes)
  A short stop is made in the charming South Canterbury town of Geraldine. Time here allows for a rest break, coffee stop and use of facilities, as well as collection of lunch before continuing inland.
• Lake Tekapo (approx. 5 minutes)
  Alpine passes lead toward the vivid blue waters of Lake Tekapo, with panoramic views opening up as the road crests the final hill. A brief stop allows time to take in the colour of the lake and surrounding mountains.
• Church of the Good Shepherd (approx. 10 minutes)
  Time is set aside to visit the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd and nearby Mackenzie Sheep Dog statue. This stop offers classic photo opportunities overlooking Lake Tekapo before the journey continues toward Mount Cook.
• Lake Pukaki (approx. 10 minutes; subject to time)
  The route turns west as Lake Pukaki comes into view, framed by the Southern Alps and Aoraki/Mount Cook. The lake’s striking turquoise colour makes this one of the most photographed locations of the day, with commentary highlighting nearby filming locations and regional features.
• Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (approx. 2 hours)
  Arrival at Mount Cook Village provides time to enjoy the dramatic alpine setting beneath New Zealand’s highest peak. Despite its height of 3,724 metres, Aoraki/Mount Cook can be viewed easily from the village without acclimatisation, as it sits just 750 metres above sea level.
• Around 2.5 hours of free time allows for self-guided walks such as Kea Point or the Tasman Glacier viewpoint, visits to the Mount Cook Visitor Centre or Hermitage Hotel, or optional activities including scenic flights with glacier landings. Pick-up and drop-off within the village are arranged to suit chosen activities.
• Return to Christchurch
  The return journey follows the same scenic route back across the Mackenzie Basin and Canterbury Plains. Comfort stops are included as required before arrival back in Christchurch in the evening, marking the end of a full day of South Island scenery.

**Please note: the Hooker Valley Track is currently CLOSED while the Department of Conservation works on replacing one of the swing bridges. This is expected to be complete in Winter 2026 so the track will be inaccessible to the public until then**
