Overview

An antidote to the crowds and queues of the resorts, Wilderness Heliski is untamed big-mountain heliskiing, amongst New Zealands highest peaks. The Mt Cook Heliski Region offers the best range of heliski terrain in New Zealand.

We are the only heliski operator within the fantastic terrain of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. Our range extends east to the shores of Lake Pukaki, and offers options for first-time heli-skiers and heli-boarders, as well as plenty of more challenging terrain for experts.

Our guides focus on a personalised experience, and your safety in the mountains. Helicopter loads are small, with groups of up to 5, plus guide. Each day we fly with only a handful of helicopter loads, scattered across this incredible mountain wilderness at the heart of the Southern Alps.

Due to extensive glaciation, the range, length of season, quality of the runs and variety available are increased.

  • Highest landings: Mount Chudleigh & Mount Hamilton - 2,800 metres

  • Highest Vertical Drop: "Whip of Love" - 1,300 metres

  • Longest Run: "Ridge Run" 4 kilometres – more than a 1,100 metre descent

Terrain for all levels of Heliskier and Heli-Boarders

Mount Cook Wilderness Heli offers even more terrain suited for expert riders and skiers than you will find in the Wanaka and Queenstown region. We also offer an excellent variety of more leisurely runs for those who are trying out heliskiing or heliboarding for the first time.

Helski loads are grouped based on ability so you don't need to worry about getting in too deep.

The Snowpack

The Southern Alps is known for its maritime snowpack so you can expect varied snow conditions and cover through the course of the season. Powder is common during the earlier part of the season while spring snow falls from the end of August.

Standard 5-Run Heliski Day

Our “standard” Wilderness Heliskiing day is by no means ordinary and includes 5 amazing runs in the highest, most remote and wildest heliski terrain in New Zealand. Additional runs are available upon request should you wish to get the most out of this experience. These extra runs can be arranged upon request on the mountain. Your guide will be able to assist you on the day or you may enquire when you make your booking.

Heliski from Queenstown or Wanaka

Sign up for our fly/heli/fly package to heliski at Mt Cook from Queenstown or Wanaka. This is the ideal option for those who are unable to spend too much time at Mt Cook. Departures from Wanaka are subject to a minimum of 6 people.

How long are the Runs?

On average, the vertical drop is about 800 metres. This may vary depending on the specific run and snow conditions. There are a number of runs with drops that exceed 1,000 vertical metres.

All of our heliski terrain is above the tree line, in the true alpine zone.

What Dates do Mt Cook Wilderness Heliskiing operate?

We offer flights every day from 1 July to 30 September, weather permitting. From July to mid-August, the conditions are colder with plenty of powder days. From mid-August, you can expect spring conditions and corn snow.

What ability is required?

Intermediate to advanced level skiers and riders will enjoy Wilderness Heliskiing as well as skiers with off-piste experience.

We offer varied terrain to suit different levels of heliskiers and heliboarders. The Wilderness Heli offers terrain better suited for advanced skiers and boarders than you will find in Queenstown or Wanaka.

You will be placed in groups based on your ability and your guide will choose the best terrain based on your skill level.

Do I need special clothing or equipment?

Wear what you normally would to any ski area but do consider that it will get colder at this higher altitude. Alpine skis, snowboards and telemark skis are all welcome on this trip. You are encouraged to ride on whatever you feel most comfortable with.

  • Skiers: We suggest skis with 90mm width under foot
  • Boarders: your bindings should be mounted so that the stance is as far back as possible
  • If needed, you can hire Fat skis, boots and poles from us (regrettably no snowboarding gear available for hire)
  • Bring goggles or quality sunglasses along with ample sunscreen
  • A small backpack is useful for carrying water, or a spare pair of gloves and any other necessities

Rental Equipment

Fat skis are available for rent from us and they are best suited for the variable snow conditions that you will likely encounter. Boot sizes vary from approximately Euro 33 to 48.

After registration, we will fit your hire skis and you will not need to arrange for a fitting earlier.

Bringing your own gear?

You may bring along your own equipment. Should you rent elsewhere, make sure that your board or skis are thoroughly waxed. Regrettably, snowboarding equipment is not available for rent at Mt Cook.

Where is the Helipad?

We operate from Mount Cook airport (5km from Mount Cook Village) or Glentanner Airfield (20km from Mt Cook Village). Free return transfers from Mt Cook Village are available if needed.

We will notify you which heli pad we will be using depending on the weather conditions and ensuring the best trip and safety on that day.

Accommodation at Mt Cook. Where can I stay?

There are a number of accommodation options in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and even more in the wider Mount Cook / Mackenzie region.
