Overview
Embark on a 32km-long adventure through our one-day Nelson to Mapua Self guided cycle tour. Challenge yourself as you cycle your way through amazing sceneries on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. This tour lets you experience the old rail route from Nelson City to Richmond, while passing by breweries, wineries and the World of Wearable Art museum. You will then be pedalling to the charming Coastal Route to Rabbit Island and Mapua.
You will begin this journey at our base in Nelson preferably between 9:00am to 9:30am. After being fitted your bikes, you will be briefed on your tour so this will be the best time to throw in your questions or ask for tips to get ready to start your cycle ride following Tasman’s Great Taste Trail to Mapua.
Nelson City has a lot of great places to visit, so you can opt to explore these nooks before heading south following the blue Great Taste Trail markers and eventually reaching the seaside village of Mapua. We recommend that you visit the ‘World of Wearable Art’ (WOW) exhibition and stop by at a country style pub called Honest Lawyer.
Enjoy the relaxing trail as you pedal through the coastal route, stop by and soak in the mesmerising views of the gorgeous farmland where you get a chance to see a range of significant bird species such as white heron. Wander towards the coastal boardwalks of the Waimea Estuary and then cross the breath-taking Waimea Swing Bridge eventually reaching the Rabbit Island.
The Island boasts a stretch of sandy beaches and fresh water swimming hole. Hopefully, you’ve packed your swimming gear so you can take a refreshing dip into the warm sea waters. Follow the trail along the main beach until you reach the Ferry landing. The short trip across the channel on the Mapua Ferry takes you to Mapua Wharf where you get to experience a different yet reviving atmosphere. Spend the rest of your day visiting the studios, shops and galleries around the area. Pedal through the nooks and crannies, sample different food and beverages at any of the restaurants and cafes or you can head to the Golden Bear Boutique Brewery.
To conclude your journey and take return shuttle leaving Mapua Wharf at 4:30pm (winter), arriving in Nelson at around 5:05pm.
