Overview
A promise of adventure awaits on the North Auckland Cheese, Honey & Matakana Wine Trail Private Tour in New Zealand; as we drive north, cross the harbour bridge, look back, and see the city’s viaduct and downtown area in full view. Around 45 minutes into our drive towards Northland and after crossing Auckland’s border, we take a break for a 30- to 45-minute cheese tasting at the award-winning Puhoi Valley Cheese Company.
We then proceed a little further along the road to the Warkworth Honey Centre for a taste of honey, a look around the shop, and a close encounter with live bees seen through a glass wall.
The real fun begins as we journey further north to the Matakana township where world-class vineyards, olive plantations, eateries, markets and art trails have something to offer for everyone.
We also take you to some of our most recommended locations on an intimate professional vineyard tour. We go to places like
- Ransom vineyard
- Providence vineyard
- Brick Bay vineyard and sculpture trail. A vineyard that stands out from the rest, it features a charming open plan indoor setting, allowing visitors to enjoy 360° views looking out over a pond, and an art sculpture trail worth wandering around.
- Takatu olive oil plantation. An award winning producer, Takatu is known for using only their own olives to create their blend and not from some combinations of olives sourced from around the world. Don’t miss tasting some of the best olive oil in the world here.
- For lunch, you can choose to sample the culinary offerings at the vineyards, or at Matakana Kitchen in the main town centre with the river, playground, walk, shops and farmers markets nearby. Catering to groups, Matakana Kitchen offers a superb menu made only from the finest locally sourced ingredients.
If you are keen, horse-riding at Pakiri Beach makes a fantastic add-on to this tour.
Additional info:
- To make it back to Auckland in late afternoon, we suggest leaving Auckland by 9.45AM.
- Duration: About 7 hours
- November to April (summer season) is the best time of the year to visit.
