Overview

Leaving Picton on your Paua Pearl Farm Tour in New Zealand, weave your way through the network of waterways and quiet bays of Queen Charlotte Sound in Marlborough, while your welcoming skipper and guide provides informative commentary. We are making our way to Whekenui Bay in Arapawa Island about one hour away by boat. Measuring 75 square kilometres (29m2), Arapawa Island is surrounded on three sides by Tory Channel, Queen Charlotte Sound and Cook Strait.

Arapawa Island was the centre of the whaling industry in the Marlborough Sounds beginning in late 1820’s through mid 1960's. On the way to Whekenui Bay, we will pass mussel, salmon and oyster farms that have taken over after the the last of whaling stations closed.

Arapawa Seafarms owners and residents of Whekenui Bay Mike and Antonia Radon will welcome you on arrival. Here they grow the valued Paua pearls or Blue Pearls, and give you a personal tour of the farm which is both their home and place of work. Marvel at how the Blue Pearl grows from almost nothing to a coveted raw material for jewellery. Depending on the timing of your tour, it’s possible to see the stages of paua growth from when they are no more than dust-specs in larval rearing tanks to mature paua encrusted with opalescent pearl. This tour, lasting approximately one hour, puts you in a prime spot to talk to the veterans of the paua industry and discover this rarely seen side of New Zealand marine life.

After the paua tour, you may take another tour of the Radon Homestead where light snacks are served before your trip back to Picton. Arriving at the Picton township, you may continue on to the Brereton Blue Pearls Jewellers where you can look at displays of these exclusive and exceptional pearls and how they are hand-crafted by the Brereton family to become custom-made jewellery bought only in the family's Picton workshop and nowhere else in the world.

For this cruise to depart, a minimum of 4 passengers is required.
