Overview

Custom-style an unforgettable Private Showcase of Dunedin Highlights day with a selection of options awaiting you in New Zealand’s stunning hot spots of Dunedin and surrounding areas.

After you’re collected door to door from your accommodation at 10AM or at a time better suited to your schedule, your suggested itinerary may include a mix and match day created over 5 to six hours around your interests.

A scenic drive taking you to admire a popular high point overlooking Dunedin, Port Chalmers and the Pacific Ocean makes a fitting introduction and gives you a sense of our city’s layout from above.

You can then experience a bit of heritage on a visit to Olveston House built for a wealthy Dunedin businessman. Listen as your guide shares with you how the family and their subsequent generations, one of Dunedin’s early settlers, lived and enjoyed their lives.

In the city, many attractions await, including Baldwin Street, one of the world’s steepest streets, and venue for the Cadbury Jaffa Race held since 2002. During the race, thousands of Jaffa lollies are rolled from the top. Leave your high-heeled shoes behind when you explore Baldwin Street.

Not far away is the hub of Dunedin – The Octagon – surrounded by St. Paul’s Cathedral, art galleries, and a delightful range of cafés where you can make a relaxing stop to sample some local treats.

If you are keen to be in the company of plants, enjoy a secluded stroll in the Botanical Gardens or the Chinese Garden where colourful blooms and mature trees make for a relaxing escape.

Your visit to Dunedin won’t be complete without a scenic drive on the winding hills on the way to Larnach Castle, showing the Port of Chalmers on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. A ticket (an extra $31 NZD per person when making your booking)  gets you inside the castle, the only one registered in New Zealand. Browse its historical collections housed in five stories and learn more about the life and times of its original owners, including the current owners who invested time and effort to restore the castle to its present-day glory for visitors to admire. Take a moment to climb to the top turret to survey the sumptuous gardens below.

The ticket will also get you to the garden trail where you can explore the vividly coloured and manicured garden through many paths that will take you among fern walks and a lookout where you can see the albatross sliently glide along the shores. Wedding functions and important occasions usually happen in the ballroom where by day you can take in the pomp and décor at the Ballroom Café while enjoying a light lunch.

At the time of booking, you may order a basket (good for two people) of local gourmet and pesto picnic if it shows this extra option.  A local culinary expert, renowned for her pesto and homemade crackers, perfectly prepares this basket in natural foraging for your lunch to enjoy at the Castle. Other treats inside may include smoked pork, cheese or chocolates to give you a taste of Dunedin NZ. Each basket costs $55 for two people.

Ideally located vantage points for fantastic photos await on your 23km drive back to Dunedin’s town center where a visit to the Settlers Museum and/or the Historical Railway Station is highly recommended.

One of the highlights of the museum is the Butterfly Room, returning in the summer of 2017/2018 and an experience not to be missed. Then admire the unique architecture of the Railway Station as you discover the finest works of art of the Art Society located on the first floor.

Before heading back to your accommodation, your guid may recommend a visit to a local wine bar/café to unwind and enjoy local New Zealand wine and tapas.

Touring on Saturdays means you will have a chance to browse the local farmers market for many more delicacies such as a fantastic brew of beer, tasty pestos (that you may have already tasted on the picnic option), and crepes with local fillings.

The activities are plentiful on this tour, so don’t forget to ask. Whether you long to walk in the wilderness, encounter local flora and fauna, or  go on a leisurely stroll on a a local beach (or ride the waves as an adventurous surfer), you will likely experience your kind of adventure.
