Punting on the Avon

Punting on the Avon is one iconic activity that no Christchurch visitor to New Zealand should miss!  Enjoy the stunning local Botanic Gardens and the city centre’s changing face as you are professionally guided on a truly authentic Edwardian punting tour along the Avon River.

Whether you plan your visit in the summer or winter, the Avon River makes for a perfectly smooth form of travel.  Your experienced punter will guide you slowly along the water and is kitted out in traditional Edwardian apparel for added authenticity.

When enjoying one of our Avon River Punting tours, you will board a handcrafted flat-bottomed boat which is skilfully navigated by an experienced punter from a platformed till located at the rear of the boat.  This is the perfect activity for families or groups and it is important to note that Puntin on the Avon is an eco-friendly activity which allows you to really relax and enjoy a different side of Christchurch.

From the Park departure point, you will be taken on a leisurely trip from the historic Antigua Boat Sheds and through the local Botanic Gardens.  Take note of the flora along the way since this is exactly what makes the “Garden City” so famous.  As an alternative, you can opt for the City departure point which will take you through the very heart of the city, through the Avon River precinct and past several interesting developments currently underway as part of the rebuilding project.  A return trip from either of these departure points takes about 30 minutes.  Do note that all punt rides are shared rides.
