Overview

Are you up for luxurious treatment on this 4 day walk in the breathtaking Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds? How about five star accommodation every night after each day's venture along some of the most spectacular landscapes?  Our new Queen Charlotte Track Five Star Experience takes you on a four day adventure that you will never forget. Available throughout the year, it is the latest of luxury options in terms on walking New Zealand's most attractive and scenic coastal track.  Who said you can't have a completely civilised experience while enjoying everything wilderness walking has to offer?

Captain James Cook

As Captain James Cook, the famous English explorer, reached the calm waters of the Marlborough Sounds during the later part of the 17th century, he must have felt like he finally reached the paradise he had always longed for.  We will take you on a modern day adventure that follows in the very footsteps of Captain Cook himself.  Make your way along the notable 70km trail based completely from the superb Bay of Many Coves (a Qualmark-rated Luxury Lodge).  This well established track is not only famous for its portions where the abundant green coastal beech forest meets the waves but also for its unique perspective of drowned river valleys.

Bay of Many Coves

From your Bay of Many Coves accommodation, you will make the most of each day by travelling to a different part of the track.  At the end of every day, you will return to your luxurious one bedroom apartment which comes fully equipped with a kitchenette, large bathroom and a private balcony where you can enjoy the relaxing views of the bay.

At the Bay of Many Coves, there is an informal waterfront café, a guest lounge as well as the Foredeck restaurant for fine-dining.  Visit these wonderful establishments and treat your taste buds to the most delicious local seafood and other fresh produce.  Don't forget to try some of the carefully selected wines from top Marlborough and international labels.  The view from the Cedar Hot Tub is exquisite and it really is the perfect place to relax after a day of walking.  The Day Spa has a variety of treatments available to make sure that you feel pampered in every way.  These treatments, meals and the amazing view make for a well-rounded experience that will make you wish you could stay forever!

NB:  The day prior to departure, a pre-tour briefing is conducted at the Picton Waterfront office at 5pm.  Kindly let us know if, for whatever reason, you are unable to attend.  The night prior to departure, you will also need to stay in Picton.

To get to Picton, probably the best way is to take the Interislander Ferry across from Wellington to Picton. Alternatively you can take the Coastal Pacific Train* up from Christchurch to Picton.

*The train will have daily departures over summer from 27 September 2019 to 26 April 2020 only.

Day 1Ship Cove to Endeavour Inlet About 14 kms/5 hrs Walking

You will be collected from your Picton accommodation and be introduced to your guide.  You will join the boat trip with Beachcomber Cruises to Ship Cove.  This is a great opportunity to learn all about the local marine life and, if we are in luck, you may even spot some dolphins too!  During his 1770s explorations, Captain Cook particularly enjoyed weighing anchor in these parts.

Your first day out will also mean that you will get to experience the untouched beech forest as well as the picturesque views throughout your guided walk.  Today's explorations will take you over two saddles with viewpoints plentiful along the way.  Once your day comes to an end, you will board a water taxi and be transported to the Bay of Many Coves Resort which will be your base for the following three nights.  Your luggage will also have been transported while you enjoyed your day out.

3 Nights Accommodation – Bay of Many Coves Resort

Day 2Furneaux Lodge to Punga CoveAbout 11.7 kms/4 hrs walking

This morning you will be collected by Beachcomber Cruises and transferred to Furneaux Lodge which is the starting point of your walk.  Today, your mainly coastal trail, will take you around the inlet through the native flora.  Hear the call of the local fantails, bellbirds and other native New Zealand birds.  Take a break at the head of the bay and find out more about the element antimony and the mining industry that thrived here back in the 1880s.  Follow the track to Big Bay before making your way to Camp Bay and Punga Cove.  At the Punga Cove waterfront bar, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a cold drink before being collected by water taxi and taken back to the Bay of Many Coves Resort.

Day 3Torea Bay to Camp Bay About 23.6 kms/8 hrs walking

This morning you will be transferred by private water taxi to Torea Bay and then return to the ridgeline where you will continue your walk along the Queen Charlotte Track.

This day's hike is somewhat more challenging as you make your way across the ridgeline between the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds.  The views around each corner are some of the most magnificent you will encounter during this trip.  That just makes all the extra effort worthwhile!

For those who feel the need for a more relaxing day can remain at Bay of Many Coves or sign up for a private guided sea kayak tour with Wilderness Guides from the resort (additional cost applicable).

If the walk is your activity of choice, then you will finish off your journey at Camp Bay before returning to Bay of Many Coves by water taxi.  This is your final evening in these luxurious surroundings so be sure to make the most of it!

Day 4Torea Bay to Anakiwa About 20.5 kms/7 hrs walking

Prepare to bid the Bay of Many Coves Resort farewell as you make your final water taxi transfer to Torea Bay.  Make your way to the Queen Charlotte Track once more, take in all the amazing views towards Picton and the Kenepuru Sound.  The sight of wide open farmland and spectacular native bush areas is the ideal way of finishing off your luxury experience.

Today you will make your way from the Anakiwa Jetty by boat and join Beachcomber Cruises for a ride back to Picton to finish off your memorable adventure.
