Itinerary
Open AllYour journey begins in Queenstown. Departing from the Athol Street Bus Station at 7.45AM, we leave for Clyde where, upon arrival, you will be fitted with your bikes at our depot and given briefing of your tour. We then drive you through to Omakau where you will start riding for Wedderburn.
Pass through one of the most scenic sections of the trail at Poolburn Gorge, habitat of the rare New Zealand falcon. Ride through the two tunnels and over two viaducts set against a magnificent backdrop in a remote rocky gorge. Then emerge into the big skies and wide open space of Ida Valley made famous by Graham Sydney’s paintings.
Tuck in for lunch at either Lauder or Oturehua. There are several sites worth exploring down the road, including the historic Hayes Engineering Workshop and the remains of Golden Progress Mine, a quartz mine a little farther up Oturehua just off the trail.
Continue on to your overnight accommodation in Wedderburn where you can also enjoy dinner (arranged at your request) at Wedderburn Tavern (price not included).
Leaving Wedderburn, ride mostly downhill to Ranfurly, a renowned Art Deco town in Central Otago, and continue pedalling to the small town of Waipiata where you can get lunch or cold drinks at a local tavern.
Then follow the Taieri River as it winds between Daisybank and Hyde, crosses the Capburn and Prices Creek Bridges, and goes through the last tunnel. The trail leaving Daisybank and going to Hyde is one of the most spectacular sections of the Railtrail, so keep your eyes peeled.
After pedalling through this fantastic landscape, take a short break for coffee and snacks at the Otago Central Hotel in Hyde where you need to arrive by 3.30PM for your 3.45PM pick up and departure to Middlemarch.
From Middlemarch, you continue on to Pukerangi where you link with the Taieri Gorge Tourist Train for your scenic trip to Dunedin.
