Overview

Our Rangitata Gorge rafting trip is the most popular of all and it runs just about every day from October all the way through to May. We begin our Rangitata River Rafting adventure at the foot of the magnificent Southern Alps in New Zealand before facing some of the wildest white water rapids in the country. This is an unforgettable rafting trip in every possible aspect!

The drive is just 30 minutes from the Christchurch – Queenstown highway, about half the the way between Christchurch and Lake Tekapo, with the closest town being Geraldine.

Our rafting base is located in the very heart of rural Canterbury at the foot of the magnificent Southern Alps. After we all meet up, we will enjoy a quick bite to eat and then drive through this picture perfect area to the starting point of our rafting trip above the Rangitata Gorge.

This ideal rafting trip starts on a gorgeous calm bit of water which allows ample time for practicing safety and paddling instructions as your professional guide supervises and teaches. As soon as everyone’s got the hang of it, the real fun begins and we enter the Rangitata Gorge. As you make your way through the narrow gorge, you will notice your confidence and adrenaline increase as the rapids naturally progress and grow more and more thrilling.

When you reach the ultimate thrilling Grade 5 rapids, you will be extremely well prepared and eagerly anticipate tackling and conquering them! In this untamed canyon, you will need to put all of your new skills to use as you navigate your way through the thundering rapids, tight spaces and rocky outcrops. It is also important to note that, if you feel like certain rapids are too much for you, you can opt out and walk around with our photographer. You can rejoin the group once the wild rapids are behind you and you feel confident enough to get back onboard.

Since we will be spending 2 and a half hours on the river itself, there will be a fair amount of time for additional activities like surfing the rapids in smaller rafts and swimming in the pristine water.

Your Rangitata Rafts trip would not be complete without a well-deserved meal to top it all off! At the end of all of our trips, we treat you to a Kiwi style BBQ as you freshen up with a hot shower and enjoy browsing through the various photographs taken during the trip. As we all enjoy the delicious flavour of South Canterbury sausage, we enjoy the exciting tales of each rafter’s experiences that day!

There is no need for any previous experience but there is a minimum age requirement of 13 years. Participants need to be reasonably fit and has basic swimming skills in order to enjoy this trip. Learn more about the Spectacular Rangitata Gorge trip.
