The other advantage of exploring these parts is that they are not frequented by the masses so you can enjoy nature at its best.
If you are curious as to what this superb river canyon holds but have only been able to catch a glimpse while driving along the SH1, then this trip is a must!
This particular river expedition gives you access to the canyon that allows you to chance to experience the waterway in a truly unique manner. As previously mentioned, you will encounter very few people along the way so you can truly relax and enjoy your surroundings. The clear fresh water and soothing sounds of nature make for the perfect getaway.
Unlike many other multi day river trips, this one has a combination of camping and accommodation at lovely riverside lodges.
Who is The Rangitikei River Explorer For?
This trip is particularly suitable for you if you're looking to explore this river, enjoy some rarely visited scenic points just a few minutes from the river and relax away from the crowds. A Rangitikei River Explorer is perfect for family groups or groups of mature friends who seek an adventure and some time outdoors together. The minimum age for this trip is 10 years.
How Much Time do I Need to Allow?
The Rangitikei River Explorer takes you along a journey lasting five days on the river and four nights of camping in some of the very best spots. The night prior to departure is spent in a deluxe guest room at the River Valley Lodge.
The Rathmoy Lodge, just 80km downstream, is where we spend the final night together. We will enjoy a farewell dinner before making our way back to the River Valley Lodge the next morning.
What Route Does the Trip Take?
The Rangitikei River Explorer begins at the lodge and takes you downstream for 80km to the Rathmoy Lodge. Rapids along this trip are usually no greater than a Grade 2, apart from two just downstream from the River Valley Lodge. These are classified as a Grade 3 and might be portaged. The rest of the rapids along the way are just great fun for all. The scenery changes each day and even from hour to hour. You will pass through some tight papa (mudrock) gorges, shored lined with native bush and open farmlands.
Where Do We Stay Each Night?
The Rangitikei River Explorer is a trip based on whitewater rafting, camping and some lodge accommodation. We strongly suggest that you are not in any way turned off by the camping aspect of the trip. Camping equipment and the level of comfort has indeed come a long way within the last few years. As you enjoy the beauty that surrounds you at each campsite, you will have your own chair to relax in as you enjoy the warm glow of the campfire. Enjoy meals that resemble those served at a respectable restaurant and enjoy a restful night's sleep in fully waterproof tents on comfortably thick sleeping pads.
What Sort of Boats Do You Travel In?
This trip makes use of a variety of rafts. For those who are looking for some extra excitement, there are inflatable kayaks. You can also swap and switch around if you want to try out both options during your trip.
What Happens at the End of the Trip?
We spend the final night at Rathmoy Lodge and, the next morning, you can be taken back to the River Valley Lodge or your vehicles can be shuttled to the end point if you prefer.
