This full-day guided Abel Tasman kayak tour departs Mārahau for Awaroa or Onetahuti, paddling through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve to Bark Bay or Anchorage. One morning departure checks in at 8:15am, with a scenic water-taxi journey into the national park, around four hours kayaking with breaks and 7.5 hours overall. Operating October–April, it includes two water-taxi trips, kayak equipment, guide, lunch, dry bags, photos and video, and suits beginners aged 12+.

Paddle Deep into Abel Tasman’s Remote Coast

Begin with a scenic water-taxi journey north from Mārahau, travelling beyond the park’s more accessible southern bays to reach the starting point for your guided paddle. Depending on tides and conditions, you’ll launch from either Awaroa or Onetahuti, where golden beaches, clear water and forested headlands set the scene for a rewarding journey south through one of Abel Tasman’s quieter coastal areas.

With approximately four hours of paddling spread across the day, there is time to explore rather than simply cover distance. Your guide leads you past granite formations, secluded bays and tidal inlets while sharing insights into the landscape and marine environment. When conditions allow, places such as Shag Harbour reveal another side of Abel Tasman, where changing tides transform sheltered waterways and hidden corners of the coast.

Kayak Through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve

The Tonga Island Marine Reserve brings wildlife and striking coastal geology into the heart of the journey. Paddle past Tonga Island and sculpted granite formations such as the Tonga Arches, keeping watch for kekeno/New Zealand fur seals along rocky shores and in the surrounding water. Seabirds and other marine life may also appear, although wildlife sightings naturally vary from day to day.

A relaxed beachside lunch provides a welcome pause before you continue south towards Bark Bay or Anchorage, depending on the day’s route. Travelling by kayak gives you an intimate, water-level perspective on this protected coastline, while the water-taxi journeys at either end extend the experience across a much larger section of Abel Tasman National Park. It’s a full day shaped by tides, wildlife, beaches and the changing character of the coast.
