The experience begins with one of the South Island’s great scenic drives, following Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown towards Glenorchy and continuing through the aptly named Paradise. At the Routeburn, cross the swing bridge into Mt Aspiring National Park and leave the road behind for a peaceful trail through native beech forest. Birdsong accompanies the walk, with the chance to spot native species such as the rare mohua, bush robin and tiny rifleman among the trees.

Follow the Routeburn River as its clear mountain water cuts through a dramatic gorge, with moss-covered forest, waterfalls and alpine views appearing along the trail. The track is easy and well marked, allowing time to enjoy the surroundings, pause for photographs and hear your guide’s insights into the plants and wildlife of the region.
