Day 1Clyde to AlexandraDistance: 16kms

Your adventure starts in Queenstown where you will be picked up from your accommodation and brought to our Clyde Depot. Here you will be fitted on your bikes, then enjoy morning tea with your tour guide including a briefing on your adventure.

Today you will cycle with your guide from Clyde on the River Track to Alexandra along the banks of the Clutha River/Mata-Atu. This is mainly flat with one or two boardwalks and bridges nearer Alexandra. You are free to explore Alexandra for the afternoon or enjoy a wine tour departing from your accommodation at 2.30pm (not included in tour price).

Day 2Alexandra to RoxburghDistance: 31 kms

The Roxburgh Gorge Gorge trail begins in Alexandra and makes its way to Doctors Point Boat Ramp. Here you will meet up with a local boat operator who transfers you to Shingle creek. Relax on board the boat while you take in the stunning scenery and history of the area.

Disembark at Shingle Creek and continue with your guide on your cycle adventure to Roxburgh township another 21 kms, passing the Roxburgh Dam, which is New Zealands biggest gravity fed dam.

Its story is retold in the first of many excellent interpertation panels dotted along the cycle trail. Picnic packed lunch is provided to enjoy on the trail.

Day 3Roxburgh to Beaumont Distance: 45 kms

Today’s ride starts from Roxburgh township which is famous for fruit orchards that serve up a splash of colour in every season. Roxburgh is also the home of famous Jimmy’s Pie shop. Clutha Gold trail starts here and follows the sparking Clutha River/Mata-Atu to Millers Flat where you will enjoy lunch at Faigans Store (20km). Towards the end of this section the trail cuts across pastoral farmland to reach Millers Flat. This wee town started life as a stop on the branch railway line to Dunedin which closed in 1968.

After lunch you continue your journey to Beaumont, continuing down the valley where the trail returns to the riverside and head through the Beaumont Gorge on a mix of quiet roads and railway line spliced together with a custom-built cycle path. It’s well worth taking a couple of short detours signposted off the trail around here. The first is horseshoe Bend Bridge, an impressive pedestrian suspension bridge built in 1913. The second nearby are the lonely graves – humble testament to the kindness of strangers. The trail emerges at the highway, from here you make your way to your accommodation.

Accommodation at Mata-Au Lodge

Meals included: B,L,D

Day 4Beaumont to LawrenceDistance: 20 kms

After breakfast you will start your journey to Lawrence heading in land through rolling farmland. The last leg of the Clutha Gold trails climbs gently along the old railway line to the highest point of the  rail, Big Hill Tunnel. After a 440m pedal through the dark the trail  sets off on its final sweep down to Lawrence. Lush farmland surrounds the route, which crosses the highway several times on its way through Evans Flat with its bygone vibe of early industry – gold mining, flax milling, and pioneer sheep farming. Lunch in Lawrence then take a historic guided walk through time of the Lawrence town centre, with facts provided by your host to inspire your imagination and minds-eye to see what Victorian style Lawrence was like during the gold rush and the years after.

Shuttle transfer back to Clyde departing 2.30pm.
