Overview
Join one of our highly in-demand New Zealand walking options from Picton in the Marlborough Sounds, that will take you through contrasting scenery ranging from wild to grand to tranquil. Nature’s Best takes you on a scenic cruise peppered with informative commentary, a stop at historical Ship Cove, and an invigorating yet scenically rewarding 15km hike up to Furneaux Lodge. Here’s what you can look forward to on your Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge Day Walk trip.
From Picton, take off on an adventure aboard one of our fleet with a cruise north through Queen Charlotte Sounds’ drowned river valleys, past dreamy bays. Turning towards Ship Cove, listen as your skipper narrates the area’s geology, history, flora and fauna. If time allows, your skipper may even get you closer to wildlife you pass along the way, notably playful dolphins who like to follow in the wake of the boat.
Captain James Cook and his crew sought refuge in the sheltered Ship Cove, and anchored here on five separate occasions in the 1770s to replenish his ship’s supply of timber, water and food. It was during this time that the local Mauri had established some of the earliest sustained contact with Europeans.
Learn more about the history of Ship Cove from the information panels before you leave the beach behind and climb amidst regenerating native forest shaded by a high canopy of trees. In the forest there grows tree ferns, five fingers, manuka and kanuka, which shelter a population of endemic New Zealand bird species like fantails, tui, silver eyes, tomtits, and cheeky weka which may show up out of nowhere if you pause for a break.
Expect commanding views of the Queen Charlotte Sound to greet you upon reaching Tawa Saddle. The track then descends into Resolution Bay and winds into Endeavour Inlet on an old bridle path.
Your destination is the Furneaux Lodge at the head of the Endeavour Inlet. You may purchase drinks and meals here on arrival before joining your cruise vessel at around 4.00 to 4.30PM for your trip back to Picton, arriving at around 5.30 to 6PM.
Walking times vary between 3 and 5 hours, depending on your level of fitness.
