A Kayak Adventure Among the Steaming Cliffs of Rotomahana
Your adventure continues on Lake Rotomahana, where calm waters contrast with steaming cliffs that rise dramatically from the shoreline. Paddling in a stable two-person kayak, you’ll glide across the lake’s surface while mist swirls around you, creating a surreal and unforgettable atmosphere. Beneath the water lies the resting place of the Pink and White Terraces, once known as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
This small group experience blends exploration and serenity, offering close encounters with geothermal activity that few ever see. Guided by passionate locals, you’ll learn about the valley’s geological evolution and its importance to Māori culture. It’s an inspiring journey through nature’s artistry, best experienced on the gentle rhythm of your paddle.
- Entry to Waimangu Volcanic Valley, including guided walk and internal bus

- Duration: Approx. 5 hours return from Rotorua (arrive 10 minutes early at Rotorua Information Centre)
- Age & Fitness: Suitable for ages 5+ with moderate fitness required for walking and kayaking
- Kayak Capacity: Two people per kayak with a maximum combined weight of 220 kg
- Weather: Tours are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions are unsuitable
- Facilities: Toilets and café available onsite, with food and drinks purchasable via card, cash, or EFTPOS
- What to Bring: Towel, water, packed lunch or café option, spare clothes, and a waterproof camera (at your own risk)
- What to Wear: Summer – lightweight, quick-dry clothing with a warm layer; cooler months – pants or leggings with at least three warm layers (thermal, fleece, or wool)

- Children: 5-16 years
