Overview

On board our catamaran, leave Halfmoon Bay at dusk for your Stewart Island Wild Kiwi Encounter in New Zealand, on a cruise to Little Glory Cove across Paterson Inlet. Pass the predator-free sanctuary of Ulva Island during the cruise and gain insight into the rich history of the entire Stewart Island. On arrival at Little Glory Cove, step off the catamaran and onto a wharf in a place called The Neck located at the southern end of the peninsula.

A nature guide leads this walk on a well-established track winding its way across the peninsula and onto a remote sandy beach through stunning coastal forest.

With dusk falling and daylight fading, light up your torchlight and venture through the native forest under the stars surrounded by the forest night sounds. It takes approximately 45 minutes to complete the walk one-way before you emerge out of the track and onto Ocean Beach where kiwi are usually found browsing the wide sandy beach strewn with grasses and seaweed.

As nightfall approaches, spot the Southern brown kiwi, otherwise known as Rakiura tokoeka, come out and search for food.

Retrace your steps afterwards, walking through the forest back to Little Glory Wharf where you join your catamaran for the ride back to Oban.

Weather, sunset and kiwi behaviour affect the timing of the tour so departure and return times may vary.

What to bring

  • Sturdy walking shoes/boots (up to approximately 2 hours walking on uneven and muddy tracks)
  • Waterproof jacket (kiwis are very sensitive to noise so please wear a soft, quiet option where possible)
  • Warm sweater/fleece jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera (although no flash photography is allowed around the kiwi)

Important information

A reasonable level of fitness is required (total walking time approximately 2 hours depending on kiwi behaviour). The walking track can be uneven and muddy at times, therefore please ensure you wear adequate footwear and are dressed for warmth including a wind and waterproof jacket. On occasions we may need to cancel a trip due to weather - please ensure that you provide contact information, so that we can keep you updated.
