Search for Wild Kiwi on Stewart Island

Set out from Oban on a guided evening wildlife experience in search of the Rakiura tokoeka, or southern brown kiwi. Begin with a scenic cruise through Stewart Island’s coastal waters towards Little Glory Cove, watching for albatross, penguins, New Zealand fur seals and other marine wildlife along the way.

After arriving at the cove, follow your nature guide through coastal forest and along a secluded beach as darkness falls. Using torchlight and moving quietly through the natural habitat, you’ll learn about tokoeka behaviour, conservation and the challenges these remarkable wild birds face on Rakiura.

About the Rakiura Tokoeka

The Rakiura tokoeka is a southern brown kiwi found on Stewart Island. Tokoeka are taonga to Rakiura Māori and are closely connected to the island’s natural and cultural identity.

Unlike many kiwi populations, Rakiura tokoeka may sometimes forage during daylight, although evening and night remain the best times to search for them. Their wild behaviour means sightings can never be guaranteed.
