Sundays are perfect for cruising, especially if you are out on a leisurely Sunday Afternoon Marlborough Sounds Cruise boat trip from Picton to the predator-free Motuara Island, a bird sanctuary sheltering some of the rarest and endangered indigenous birds in New Zealand. Leaving Motuara Island, you make your way to the historical Ship Cove named by Captain James Cook when he first dropped anchor here in 1770.
On arrival at the Ship Cove, you will have 15 minutes to explore the beach and spot resident birdlife such as Oyster Catchers, Weka or native Wood Hens and Paradise Ducks. You may also want to take a photo beside Captain Cook’s monument marking his visits here. Climb back on board and prepare for the cruise home, passing Ruakaka Bay en route to view the Salmon Farm.
