South Island

Start: Marahau
Locations: 3 See all
Duration: 3 days
Difficulty: 2
Minimum Age: 6

This three-day supported Abel Tasman Great Walk departs Mārahau, travelling by water taxi to Awaroa or Totaranui before walking south to Onetahuti, Anchorage and Mārahau. Departures run Saturdays January–March, with extra dates on request and up to 4–6 hours walking on longer days. It includes beachside camps, tents, mattresses, all meals, bag transfers and morning/evening guide support, and suits independent walkers aged 6+ who prefer walking without a heavy overnight pack.

Walk Independently, Arrive to a Camp Ready for You

Set out each morning with a light day pack and the freedom to experience the Abel Tasman Coast Track at your own pace. Depending on tides, your journey can begin at Totaranui or Awaroa before continuing south through Onetahuti, Bark Bay and Anchorage. Along the way, golden beaches give way to native forest, tidal estuaries and elevated coastal viewpoints, with landmarks including Tonga Saddle, Falls River suspension bridge and Torrent Bay.

While you walk independently, your guide takes care of the logistics behind the scenes. Your main bag is transferred between campsites, tents and mattresses are set up before you arrive, and each evening you are welcomed with a prepared dinner and a comfortable place to settle in. It gives you the independence of a self-guided Great Walk with the reassurance of practical support waiting at the end of each day.

Sleep by the Beach and Wake Ready for the Track

The overnight camps are part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep. Spend your evenings at Onetahuti and Anchorage surrounded by native bush and close to the coast, with dinner and dessert prepared while you relax after the day's walk. With tents, mattresses, cooking equipment and meals organised for you, there is no need to carry the equipment normally associated with a multi-day camping trip.

Mornings begin with breakfast at camp before you pack only what you need for the day's walk. Your guide transfers the rest while you continue along the Coast Track with a packed lunch and snacks. By Day 3, the final 12.4 km stretch leads from Anchorage towards Mārahau, passing coastal viewpoints, Adele Island views and wetlands before finishing with hot showers and a well-earned rest back at base.
