Overview

The volcanic landscape of Tongariro Northern Circuit Track, New Zealand’s first National Park and located in central North Island, beckons walkers with its rich geological and ancestral past. Closely tied with the Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro and Ngati Tuwharetoa tribes who consider the surrounding area sacred, the 43.1 km. Tongariro Northern Circuit Independent Walk Package takes 4 days to complete. The track brings guests around the volcanic cone of Mt. Ngauruhoe whose central and high altitude location puts walkers in prime position for panoramic views. Often shrouded in alpine mists, Tongariro Northern Circuit Track promises to be an unforgettable experience for adventurous and superbly fit walkers!

The Tongariro Northern Circuit is considered challenging as most of it is on open exposed terrain with much of it on uneven track surfaces. Cold temperatures, snow strong winds and heavy rain can occur at any time of the year.

You are responsible for your own and party members safety. For your safety you should advise a family member or friend when you leave for and return from your walk. At times severe weather conditions or events may make sections of the track impassable and you may not be able to complete your walk.

The recommended minimum age for the Tongariro Northern Circuit is 10 years.

Day 1Arrive National Park Village

Arrive National Park Village and stay at the Park Hotel.

Day 2National Park - Whakapapa Village – Mangatepopo HutDistance: 8.5 km / Walk 3-5 hrs

Your journey on the first day puts you front and centre of Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro, both impressive sights to behold. There are a few streams to cross as you make your way past lava flows and volcanic cones. Your destination on this first day, the Mangatepopo Valley and its hut, will bring you past the base of a small volcano, Pukekaikiore.

Day 3Mangatepopo Hut – Oturere HutDistance: 12.8 km / Walk 5 hrs

Weather permitting, there’s an option for a three-hour climb to the peak of Mt. Ngauruhoe which stands at 2,287m above sea level.

The alternative is to explore the lava flows and make a stop at Soda Springs before making your way up Mangatepopo Saddle. On a fine day, Mt. Taranaki and the valley below can be viewed from this point where you can decide to make a bid for the summit of Mt. Ngauruhoe.

At Red Crater, you can take the ridge that will bring you to the spectacular Emerald Lakes. There’s a challenging descent over a field of more lava flows as you head down to the Oturere Valley where you will find your hut for the night. 

Day 4Oturere Hut - Waihohonu HutDistance: 7.5 km / Walk 3 hrs

Landscapes dominated by stream valleys, gravel fields and undulating terrain await you on this day. Enjoy the view as you go around the foothills of Mt. Ngauruhoe. The land rolls and flows as you climb out of the Waihohonu Stream Valley and get closer to your hut for the night. 

Day 5Waihohonu Hut - Whakapapa Village - National Park VillageDistance: 14.3 kms / Walk 5 hrs

This morning head west and follow the Waihohonu Stream, then climb up to the Tama Saddle. Turn right for the Tama Lakes Junction. The upper lake farther up can be reached after a 35-minute climb, and heading back down to the junction takes about 1-1/2 hours in total.

You will have about 2 hours left for your last push towards Whakapapa Village, your final destination.

Overnight the Park Hotel, National Park Village

Day 6Depart National Park Village

This morning you will depart national Park Village.
