Overview
This spectacular Tongariro Sunset Guided Walk evening option works best for visitors who want to maximize their allocated travel day to or from Tongariro, or for those who wish to experience Tongariro National Park in New Zealand at a stunning time of day without the strenuous full day Tongariro Alpine Crossing Trek that usually comes with exploring a volcanic terrain.
New Zealand’s oldest national park is not only a visual feast of spectacular volcanic landscapes but also a prominent Maori cultural and spiritual symbol. For individuals and groups who want to make the most of their mid- to late afternoon arrival in the area and want to experience the magic of Tongariro National Park without the hard work, this two-hour Tongariro Sunset Guided Walk fits in nicely with schedules that require next-day morning departure.
The Tongariro Sunset Guided Walk is done on an easy grade track on Mt. Ruapehu. We make our way up to a height of 1500m on Ruapehu via the Whakapapa Road. Then, we head out walking the Round the Mountain Track for 45 minutes to a ridge with a fantastic view of the sun setting over Mt. Taranaki 140 kms to the west. We sit and relax at the ridge while enjoying one of New Zealand’s finest wines as we also drink in the beauty of the majestic alpine landscape by the fading light. You will get the opportunity to learn from your guide about the geology and volcanology of the area, and how those connect with New Zealand’s cultural history. Marvel at this wild and beautiful landscape at a stunning time of day!
