With the completion of the 5km section trail into Wakefield, you will now be able to explore the different side of this town and pedal through the vast farmlands, vineyards and hop gardens while sampling at the array of delectable food and refreshments.

Your journey begins at 8:35am at our Nelson City depot where you will receive the bike fitted for you. After a short briefing, grab your bikes and get ready to board our trail transport at 9:00 am. Our highly experienced driver will entertain you with trails and food stop tips, you won’t even notice the 45-minute shuttle ride to Spooner’s Tunnel.
Cycling through the 1,352-metre long Spooner’s Tunnel will give you a sense of satisfaction and awe as you pedal through the longest tunnel open to cyclists in the southern hemisphere. Stop by to marvel at the amazing sceneries of the old rail corridor into Richmond, highlighting the luscious farmlands and unspoiled forests while offering us a peek at the swing bridges and pristine rivers of the countryside. This experience is both relaxing and exhilarating.
We encourage you to stop by and take your lunch at the Grape Escape Café to replenish your energy, then head to Richmond Plains/Te-Mania winery and try out some of their world class wines. Oh, and make room for dessert their real fruit ice cream made from homegrown berries are worth trying.
The 15km ride from Richmond to Mapua can accommodate varying interests. You can enjoy the charming coastal boardwalks of Waimea Estuary or go bird watching at a farmland known to be a home of the white heron or kotoku. If you are a wine aficionado, head to Nelson, Seifried Estate. This oldest and largest winery will surely tickle your interest and palate.
Whichever you choose, the trail will take you to Rabbit Island’s main beach where you will arrive at the Ferry landing. Take a stroll along the white sandy beaches of Rabbit Island and dip in the warm sea waters, we know you can’t resist it.
As your trips nears its end, slow down and relax it will just be a short trip across Mapua Ferry to the Mapua Wharf, then you will get to spend the rest of your day strolling around the galleries, shops and studios. Or one can opt to sit and conclude the day at the Golden Bear Boutique Brewery or any of the restaurants and cafés in the area, while waiting for the shuttle trip returning back to Nelson City.
