Experience a unique cycling adventure through our new 1 day Tunnel to Town self guided cycle tour through the longest disused rail tunnel. With the completion of the of the 5km section trail into Wakefield, you will be able to explore the scenic farmlands, vineyards, orchards and hop gardens; while stopping to sample world class food and beverages.
Begin your journey at 8:35am at our Nelson City depot, where you will have a short briefing and receive the bike fitted for you. At 9:00am, everyone is set to board our trail transport finally escaping to the countryside. Immerse yourself as you listen to our experienced Kiwi Journey driver’s tips about the trail and food stops, you won’t even notice the 45-minute shuttle ride to Spooner’s Tunnel.
Challenge yourself as you pedal through the 1,352 metres length of the Spooner’s Tunnel. Experience a breath-taking ride through the longest tunnel open to cyclists in the southern hemisphere.
You will be passing by old rail corridors into Richmond, luscious forests, flowing rivers and swing-bridges. The rewarding experience of tranquillity and picturesque sceneries of the countryside are just some of the highlights of this tour.
Replenish your energy and stop by for lunch, we highly recommend that you try at the Grape Escape Café followed by wine tasting at the Richmond Plains/Te-Mania winery and then a real fruit ice cream made from homegrown raspberries and boysenberries.
Spend the rest of your day exploring nooks and places in between Richmond and Nelson City. Head out to Eddyline Brewery & Pizzeria, Pics Peanut Butter World, and McCashins Brewery. You can take a stroll at the World of Wearable Art & Classic Car Museum; or take a detour to visit the waterfront scenic route, and try the stand-up paddle boarding at the Tahunanui Beach, sample their eateries and craft beer. Discover the taste these places have to offer as you cap off your day.
