Tucked away in the centre of the North Island are some of the country's most famous scenic attractions – Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the captivating city of Rotorua which is famous for its geothermal features.
This full day sightseeing tour has everything you could ever want. Get a closer look at the glowworms and famous limestone formations that call the Waitomo Caves home. The rich Maori culture and heritage can be enjoyed along with the geothermal sights in Rotorua. As you leave Auckland in the morning, you will be taken through the beautiful farmland of the Waikato and King Country regions. Your skilled local driver guide will ensure that you are entertained with some interesting commentary as you pass by various historical sites and points of interest like Rangiriri (where the major battle in the Maori Land Wars took place in 1863).
Upon arriving in the small town of Waitomo, you will be taken on a guided tour of the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This 45 minute tour will allow you to get a close look at the stalactites, stalagmites and various other fascinating limestone formations that have formed over the last 30 million years. These caves were initially discovered back in 1887 and they are now one of the most popular attractions in the entire country. Your tour of the caves finishes off in grand fashion with a boat ride into the Glowworm Grotto. This underground cavern is illuminated by the sparkling lights of thousands of glowworms and, for many travellers, this is one of the biggest highlights of their trip.
Once you leave Waitomo, you will be served a tasty picnic-style lunch en route to Rotorua. Do note that vegetarian and other dietary options are available upon request. Once we reach the heart of the Central North Island, you will be taken to visit the Agrodome which is located on the outskirts of Rotorua. Here you will enjoy a tour of the organic working farm in an all-terrain vehicle. Learn more about the local agriculture which is New Zealand's primary industry. You will also get to see a live sheep shearing demonstration as well as a live sheep dog trial.
Once your Agrodome tour comes to an end, you will be taken to Te Puia. This is one of the country's most important cultural spots and, at Te Puia's marae (meeting house), you will be welcomed in traditional Maori style. You will also be entertained by a traditional Maori cultural performance that depicts both modern and ancient stories through song, dance, poi and stick games. This experience will really give you a better understanding of the Maori culture and their history while you are thoroughly entertained.
Next up is a guided tour through the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. See the bubbling mud pools, active geysers and other geothermal activities that make this area so famous. One of the main sights here is the magnificent Pohtu geyser. It releases powerful vapour jets up to 30 metres into the air! This part of the tour also includes a trip to Te Puia's woodcarving and weaving schools. Apprentices here are trained in these traditional skills by experienced weavers and carvers.
After your full day tour of Waitomo and Rotorua, you will board the coach for your trip back to Auckland. On the way, you will be served a scrumptious afternoon snack that includes some traditional Maori rewana bread.
