Discover Geothermal Wonders, Māori Culture, and Coastal Road Trips

Explore geothermal landscapes, Māori culture, beautiful beaches, volcanic scenery and vibrant cities on a North Island self-drive holiday. Choose a short regional escape, travel between Auckland and Wellington or follow a longer circuit covering destinations from the Bay of Islands to the lower North Island.

Each itinerary combines the freedom of independent travel with pre-arranged car hire and accommodation. Routes can normally be adjusted with extra nights, alternative accommodation and additional tours or activities to suit your dates, interests and preferred pace.

  • Trip duration: Most North Island self-drive holidays run for 5 to 14 days, with extended itineraries of up to 21 days also available.
  • Starting points: Most itineraries begin in Auckland, although selected holidays start in Wellington.
  • Finishing points: Routes normally finish in Auckland or Wellington, with some itineraries available in the reverse direction.
  • What is included: Packages generally include car hire, pre-booked accommodation and a planned day-by-day itinerary. Selected tours, activities, rail journeys or meals may also be included.
  • Driving each day: Most travelling days involve approximately 2 to 4 hours of driving. Longer journeys between regions may take 4 to 5 hours, while multi-night stays provide days with little or no driving.

How Do North Island Self-Drive Itineraries Compare?

The right itinerary depends on how much of the island you want to see and how frequently you prefer to change accommodation. Shorter trips concentrate on a few neighbouring regions, while longer holidays provide more two-night stays, shorter driving stages and time for additional activities.

What Is Included in a North Island Self-Drive Package?

North Island self-drive packages normally include a rental vehicle for the required driving period, accommodation at each overnight destination and a day-by-day itinerary. Your itinerary explains the recommended route, approximate travelling time and planned overnight stops, making it easier to enjoy the journey without arranging every component separately.

Depending on the package selected, inclusions may also feature admission to attractions, guided tours, cultural experiences, cruises, rail journeys or selected meals. The individual itinerary will clearly identify which experiences are included and which are available as optional additions.

What Is Not Normally Included?

Airfares, fuel, parking, most meals, travel insurance and optional activities are not normally included unless they are specifically listed in the package. Rental vehicle insurance conditions, excess reductions, additional driver fees and one-way charges can differ between packages and should be checked when requesting a quote.

Can a North Island Self-Drive Itinerary Be Changed?

North Island self-drive holidays can normally be customised by adding or removing nights, changing the accommodation standard or replacing included experiences. Routes may also be shortened, extended or travelled in the reverse direction when suitable accommodation and rental vehicles are available.

Several North Island packages can also be combined with a South Island itinerary to create a longer New Zealand holiday. Tell us your travel dates, preferred destinations and interests, and we can help create an itinerary with a comfortable balance of driving and sightseeing.

Frequently asked questions

Most North Island itineraries are planned around driving periods of approximately 2 to 4 hours on travelling days. Routes through rural areas, coastal regions and volcanic landscapes can take longer than the distance may suggest, so itineraries allow time for rest stops, viewpoints and attractions along the way.

Some longer sectors may involve 4 to 5 hours behind the wheel, particularly when travelling between major regions. Multi-night stays in places such as Rotorua, Taupō, Napier, the Bay of Islands or Wellington help balance these travel days with time to explore without packing and driving every morning.

Popular northern routes connect Auckland with the Bay of Islands, Waipoua Forest, the Coromandel Peninsula and Waitomo. These itineraries combine beaches, maritime history, ancient forests, caves and smaller coastal communities, often returning to Auckland at the end of the journey.

Central and southern routes travel through destinations such as Hobbiton, Rotorua, Lake Taupō, Tongariro National Park, Napier, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. Depending on the route, you can experience geothermal attractions, Māori culture, volcanic landscapes, wineries, wildlife encounters and city sightseeing.

Driving in New Zealand is safe. However, it is important to familiarize yourself with the local road rules, signs, and conditions. Take note of varying road conditions, especially in rural or mountainous areas. Follow speed limits, wear seat belts, and drive defensively. Be cautious of narrow or winding roads and adjust your driving to suit the weather conditions.

Our self-drive packages offer a range of rental car options to suit different preferences and group sizes. Common options include economy cars, sedans, SUVs, campervans, and 4WD vehicles. Choose a car that best fits your needs in terms of size, comfort, and terrain suitability.
