What was Rotoroa Island used for before it became a wildlife sanctuary?

In Explore Group

The Salvation Army opened New Zealand’s first addiction treatment centre on Rotoroa Island in 1911. It operated until 2005, and the island opened to the public in 2011 after restoration began. Today, its museum tells that story alongside its conservation work; you can compare Rotoroa with other Auckland islands for native wildlife.
