The Ultimate New Zealand is suited to fit, active travellers who enjoy spending consecutive days outdoors and want a genuine backcountry hiking experience. Previous multi-day hiking experience isn't essential, but good fitness, agility and preparation are important.
You should be comfortable with:
- An average of around 4–5 hours of activity per day
- Hiking for up to 8–9 hours on the longest days
- Carrying a 10–12 kg backpack on selected overnight hikes
- Uneven and sometimes challenging tracks
- River crossings
- Elevation gains of up to approximately 800 metres
- Backcountry huts and camping
- Shared facilities and some multi-share accommodation
- Changing mountain and coastal weather
- Helping with meal preparation and group camp life
This is a Grade 4 hiking trip, so regular walking and fitness training before arriving in New Zealand is strongly recommended.
For those seeking a shorter trip, the itinerary can be split into Ultimate North Island and Ultimate South Island options.
Accommodation varies throughout the trip and is part of the backcountry experience. Depending on the location, you'll stay in a combination of lodges, cabins, backcountry huts and campsites.
Some nights involve twin or multi-share accommodation and shared bathroom facilities, while remote hiking sections use huts or tents. This varied accommodation allows the itinerary to reach wilderness areas that wouldn't be possible on a conventional hotel-based tour.
Solo travellers can choose a private-room upgrade on selected nights where private accommodation is available. Camping arrangements provide solo travellers with their own tent.
Most meals are included and meals are prepared as a group, with everyone helping with cooking and clean-up. This shared approach is part of the small-group hiking experience.
Meals are designed to provide plenty of energy for active days, while opportunities to purchase your own meals are available at selected locations during the trip.
