Experience High-Country Farm Life at Walter Peak

Cruise from central Queenstown aboard the historic TSS Earnslaw, enjoying panoramic views across Lake Whakatipu towards the surrounding mountains. Walter Peak’s secluded lakeside setting has connections to Māori travel and pounamu gathering, followed by European farming from the 1860s. Today, its heritage buildings, gardens and working-farm atmosphere provide an engaging introduction to rural life in New Zealand’s high country.

A knowledgeable host leads you through the farmyard to meet sheep, Highland cattle, alpacas and other friendly animals. Watch skilled sheepdogs respond to commands during a live demonstration and learn how they help farmers manage livestock across large areas of hill country. Finish with freshly baked scones, cakes and slices accompanied by tea or coffee, with time to explore the lakeside gardens before cruising back to Queenstown.

About Walter Peak High Country Farm

Set on the western shore of Lake Whakatipu, Walter Peak has a long history connected to travel, farming and life in the high country. Māori once travelled through this area while gathering food and pounamu, before European farming began during the 1860s.

The property later became one of the region’s best-known high-country stations. Today, visitors can explore its lakeside setting, meet the farm animals and learn how rural traditions continue at Walter Peak.
