About Cowan’s Private Observatory in Lake Tekapo
Cowan’s Private Observatory is a purpose-built stargazing location in Lake Tekapo, designed for small-group astronomy experiences in a truly dark sky environment. Its cleverly constructed craters provide shelter from wind and reduce light interference, allowing for consistently clear and immersive viewing conditions. Situated in the heart of the Mackenzie Basin, it’s one of the best places in New Zealand to experience the night sky in comfort and clarity.
This exclusive observatory setting enhances the overall experience, offering a quieter and more personal alternative to larger observatories. Combined with expert-led guidance and powerful telescopes, it delivers a high-quality astronomy experience that suits both first-time visitors and keen stargazers. Its location within the Dark Sky Reserve ensures every session is shaped by some of the clearest skies in the world.
