Summit Experience in Lake Tekapo: Stargazing at Mt John Observatory

A premium stargazing experience awaits at the Summit Experience in Lake Tekapo, held at the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory on the summit of Mount John Summit. Located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, this guided tour offers access to New Zealand’s only professional research observatory. With high elevation and minimal light pollution, it delivers some of the clearest and darkest night sky conditions in the Southern Hemisphere.

Your journey begins with transport to the summit, where expert guides introduce the night sky using the naked eye before moving to powerful telescopes, including a 16-inch telescope inside a private observatory dome. You’ll observe constellations, planets, star clusters, and distant galaxies while gaining insight from both Māori and Western astronomy perspectives. With limited access, immersive storytelling, and world-class viewing conditions, this experience is worth booking ahead for a truly unforgettable night in Lake Tekapo.

  • Return transport from the base to Mount John Summit
  • Stargazing using 16” telescopes, or observatory dome, and with the naked eye
  • Extreme cold weather (ECW) jacket, if required
  • Check-in at Dark Sky Project base 15 minutes prior to tour departure.
  • Dress for a night among the stars. The summit's altitude calls for warm clothing and sturdy footwear, regardless of the season. We’ll loan you an extreme cold weather (ECW) jacket, but it helps to start with something warm. Please avoid any clothing with lights or bright flashes.
