Christchurch – Your day begins as we leave the Garden City, heading north towards Arthur’s Pass. Along the way, our knowledgeable driver will highlight some of Christchurch’s key landmarks and points of interest.
Springfield/Alpine Jet – As we travel through the scenic Selwyn District, we’ll stop in the charming western-style town of Springfield. From here, we’ll take a turn towards Alpine Jets, where you can experience the thrills of jet boating on the Waimakariri River—this is where jet boating was invented! For those not taking part in the jet boating, there’s time for cuddling lambs and soaking up the rich history of this beautiful landscape.
Castle Hill (1 hour) – After our stop, we continue to Castle Hill, where striking limestone rock formations rise proudly from the rolling hills. These fascinating rocks were once underwater, slowly eroding over time to form the unique shapes you’ll see today. The area is popular with climbers and boulderers, and you might recognise the landscape from films like The Lord of the Rings and Narnia. You’ll have time to explore this incredible area on your own.
Lake Pearson / Lake Lyndon (10 mins) – Our journey continues with a brief stop at Lake Pearson, the largest of three glacial lakes in the area, surrounded by the towering Southern Alps. This picturesque spot is popular with swimmers, anglers, and nature lovers. We’ll also pause at the nearby Lake Lyndon, a colder but equally beautiful lake that sits at the base of Porters Pass, offering a peaceful retreat for birdwatchers and brave swimmers.
Otira Gorge Lookout (15 mins) – Also known as "Death’s Corner", this lookout offers a spectacular view of the Otira Viaduct, an impressive 440-metre-long bridge that makes driving through Arthur’s Pass possible. It’s the perfect spot for a photo, with stunning views of the surrounding national park. You may even spot a cheeky Kea, New Zealand’s playful alpine parrot!
Arthur’s Pass Village (1 hour) – Next, we’ll head to Arthur’s Pass village, with the majestic Southern Alps as your backdrop. Once here, you’ll have the option to hike the Devil’s Punch Bowl track or take a leisurely stroll around the village’s shops and cafés.
Devil’s Punch Bowl – This one-hour walking track features a gradual incline, leading you through native bush to a dramatic 131-metre waterfall. Suitable for low to moderate fitness levels, it’s a rewarding walk that offers stunning natural scenery.
Arthur’s Pass Village – If walking isn’t your thing, you can simply relax in the village, grab a coffee, and browse the local shops. The village also offers plenty of information about the area for those curious to learn more.
Cave Stream (15 mins) – Our next stop is Cave Stream, where you’ll find an underground river flowing through a 594-metre-long cave. This natural wonder is accessible even to inexperienced cavers and offers a fun and unique experience.
Porters Pass – As we continue, we’ll drive through Porters Pass, which sits 939 metres above sea level. This mountain pass offers breathtaking views of the Canterbury Plains, winding through the third-highest highway in the South Island. It’s a stunning way to end the day’s adventures.
Christchurch – Sadly, it’s time to return to Christchurch. We’ll drop you back at your accommodation, bringing the day to a close with plenty of great memories and photos. It’s been an incredible journey, and we hope to see you again!
