Thinking of taking on one of New Zealand’s most epic alpine hikes? Mueller Hut is an unforgettable destination perched high in the Southern Alps, offering jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Mt Sefton, and the Hooker Valley. Whether you're a seasoned tramper or a first-time alpine adventurer, this guide covers everything you need to know to make the most of your Mueller Hut experience.

What Makes Mueller Hut So Special?

Mueller Hut isn’t just a hike—it’s an alpine adventure with a serious wow factor. Sitting at 1,800 metres above sea level in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, this iconic red-roofed hut looks out over a landscape of jagged peaks, hanging glaciers, and tumbling avalanches. The sight of Mt Sefton bathed in golden sunset light or the stars glittering over the Southern Alps is reason enough to lace up your boots.

The 5.2 km track starts from White Horse Hill Campground and climbs steeply via Sealy Tarns (dubbed the “Stairway to Heaven” thanks to its 2,200+ steps). The track then ascends across rugged alpine terrain to the hut. It’s challenging, but the rewards are unmatched: views, silence, and that exhilarating feeling of being on top of the world.

Tips for Planning Your Trip to Mueller Hut

Because of its elevation and alpine location, hiking to Mueller Hut does require preparation. In summer (December to March), the route is usually snow-free, and no alpine equipment is needed. However, the weather can change quickly, so always check the forecast and trail conditions with DOC (Department of Conservation) before setting out.

Bookings are essential during the summer months, and you’ll want to secure your spot well in advance. The hut has 28 bunks, gas cookers, and mattresses, but no electricity or running water—so bring your own food, cooking gear, water, and layers for all seasons. In winter, it becomes a serious alpine route and should only be attempted by experienced mountaineers.
