Start Your South Island Ski Roadie from Christchurch

From the moment you leave Christchurch, you’re on the doorstep of winter magic. Just a short drive away, Mount Hutt offers some of the best powder in the country and is perfect for your first day on the slopes. With the Southern Alps as your backdrop, you’ll soon be winding your way through snowy high-country landscapes towards Tekapo and Mount Cook.

Tekapo’s turquoise lake and snowy hills make for an unforgettable stop, especially under its famously starry skies. Carrying on to Aoraki/Mount Cook brings dramatic alpine views and fantastic walking tracks, ideal for rest days off the skis. From there, continue south to Wanaka for the twin gems of Cardrona and Treble Cone, before rolling into Queenstown where the Remarkables and Coronet Peak await.

Loop Through the West Coast and Glacier Country

For those with more time, a loop across to the West Coast delivers an entirely different flavour of the South Island. Franz Josef Glacier offers an icy contrast to your ski days, with rugged rainforest meeting snow-covered peaks. It's a stunning detour that adds wild beauty and variety to your ski-focused itinerary.

After soaking in glacier views and perhaps a hot pool or two, the journey loops back via Arthur’s Pass, one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives. This route gives you a chance to squeeze in a few extra snow days at Mount Hutt before returning to Christchurch. It’s the ultimate mix of alpine thrills, natural wonders, and unforgettable winter road trip memories.
