A Franz Josef heli hike combines a scenic helicopter flight with a guided walk on the glacier itself. You’re flown high onto the ice before hiking with a professional guide using specialist equipment.

The full experience typically lasts around 3–4 hours, including safety briefings, helicopter flights and approximately 2 hours on the glacier.

No experience is required. The Franz Josef heli hike is suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Guides tailor the pace to the group and provide full instruction.

Wear warm layers, comfortable clothing and bring sunglasses and sunscreen. All glacier-specific gear, including ice boots and crampons, is provided.

Glacier conditions and weather are monitored closely. If flights are cancelled due to weather, you’ll usually be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
