Itinerary
Day 1: Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge via Motuara Island
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your Picton accommodation, where you'll meet your knowledgeable Wilderness Guide. From here, board a boat bound for Motuara Island, enjoying a guided tour en route to Ship Cove. Along the way, you may spot dolphins and other marine life. On Motuara Island, take a short walk to the lookout, which offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Marlborough Sounds. Keep an eye out for endangered native birds, such as the South Island Saddleback (Tieke), at this predator-free bird sanctuary.
Arrive late morning at Ship Cove, the starting point of the Queen Charlotte Track. This area, rich in history, was a cherished anchorage for Captain Cook in the 1770s and holds cultural significance for local Māori. The track on this section winds through magnificent podocarp and beech forest, interspersed with punga ferns and native foliage, making it one of the most beautiful stretches of the trail. Your day concludes at the historic Furneaux Lodge.
Note: The visit to Motuara Island is weather-dependent and lacks shelter or restroom facilities.

Day 2: Endeavour Inlet to Punga Cove
Set out on a scenic coastal walk from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove, meandering through regenerating native bush accompanied by the melodies of bellbirds, fantails, and other native bird species. The trail leads across a small swing bridge to the head of Endeavour Inlet, where you’ll uncover stories of the area’s antimony mining history from the 1880s.
Continue through the tranquil forest, reaching Big Bay, where pristine native beech trees surround the track. The day’s journey ends as you approach Camp Bay and the inviting Punga Cove.

This section is renowned for its extraordinary views, with panoramic vistas of the Marlborough Sounds, including the iconic sight from Eatwell’s Lookout. As you walk, you’ll enjoy glimpses of both Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound.
For those seeking a more leisurely day, a boat ride around the bays of Queen Charlotte Sound to the Portage Hotel is available as an optional alternative (additional cost).

Day 4: Torea Bay/Portage Hotel to Anakiwa
Depart the Portage Hotel and ascend once more to the ridgeline, where you’ll soak in stunning views of Picton and the turquoise waters of Kenepuru Sound. Frequently asked questions
In summer (December–February), daytime temperatures typically range from the early to late 20s°C, with very hot days reaching up to 30°C. Spring (September–November) offers milder conditions, ranging from 14°C to 20°C, while autumn (March–May) brings cooler, settled weather, with temperatures around 16°C–18°C in March, dropping to 10°C–12°C by May.

The enjoyment of any walk is greatly enhanced with a reasonable level of fitness – but don’t worry, you don’t need to be a marathon runner! If you’re active 2–3 times a week, whether through walking, golfing, running, or going to the gym, you’ll already have a solid foundation for tackling a multi-day walk like the Queen Charlotte Track. To prepare, consider doing at least one longer walk (up to 8 hours) and incorporate some hill walking into your routine, as the track does include some steeper sections.
When walking the Queen Charlotte Track, each person is limited to one item of luggage weighing no more than 15kg. This is because the luggage is transported by water taxi each day and needs to be lifted on and off the boats. A suitcase with wheels or a duffle bag works well for this purpose.
For any additional baggage, you can store it at our waterfront office. Alternatively, if you are staying in Picton before and after your walk, many local accommodation providers offer storage services for excess luggage.
