Frequently asked questions

All hire bikes come with a helmet, lock, rear carrier bag, bottle cage, tools, and spares. Bring your own water bottle.

You’re welcome to use your own seat or pedals—our team can fit them at the depot. Just remember to remove them before returning the bike.

We recommend someone in your group knows how to fix a flat. If your hire bike becomes unrideable, we’ll get a replacement to you. Damage or misuse may incur repair costs.

Bringing your own bike? Make sure it’s serviced and pack spares specific to your setup.

Most of the trail has reception, but expect blackspots in remote areas. International visitors should consider a local NZ SIM to avoid roaming costs.

The trail is a loop, but we recommend riding clockwise for a more scenic descent into Baton Valley. Our Nelson depot(on St Vincent Street) is right on the trail, with changing rooms and secure parking ($10/day).

Flying is the most direct option. If driving:

  • From the North Island, take the Cook Strait ferry.
  • From Christchurch, expect about a 6-hour drive.

Expect variable conditions year-round.

  • Spring/Summer: 12–25°C
  • Winter: 3–12°C

While it’s one of NZ’s sunniest regions, weather can still shift quickly—pack layers.
