Explore Castle Hill’s Boulders and Alpine Landscapes

Your day begins with pickup from Christchurch before heading west across the Canterbury Plains, with a short stop at the famous Sheffield Pie Shop along the way. Soon after, the road climbs into the Craigieburn Basin, where Castle Hill/Kura Tāwhiti rises dramatically from the surrounding mountains. Known for its cultural significance and striking limestone formations, this site is a highlight for photographers, climbers, and anyone who loves landscapes with a touch of magic.

Your guide will lead you through the maze of giant boulders, pointing out hidden passages and sharing stories about the area’s Māori heritage and unique geology. Whether you want to try a little bouldering, wander the paths, or simply soak up the views, Castle Hill offers a memorable stop. Lunch will be served among the rocks, with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery before continuing your journey.

Adventure Underground at Cave Stream

Just a short drive from Castle Hill lies Cave Stream, an exciting underground river cave stretching nearly 600 metres. With helmets and safety gear provided, your guide will lead you upstream through winding passages, small waterfalls, and chambers where the light plays beautifully on the limestone walls. The adventure ends with a fixed ladder climb beside a cascading waterfall—an exhilarating finale to the caving experience.

If caving isn’t for you, the surrounding landscapes are equally spectacular, famously used in film settings and perfect for a relaxing walk or afternoon tea. As the tour returns via the Great Alpine Highway, you’ll pass sweeping views of the Torlesse Range and the iconic Gap before arriving back in Christchurch. It’s the perfect blend of natural wonders, local stories, and outdoor adventure.
