Christchurch 7:00 AM – We begin our journey by leaving the vibrant Garden City and heading north, with our knowledgeable driver pointing out some of Christchurch’s key highlights along the way.
Lake Lyndon (5 mins) – Our first stop is Lake Lyndon, nestled near Porters Pass. This picturesque lake is a popular spot for rainbow trout fishing, thanks to its thriving fish population. Surrounded by the Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park and fed by the Acheron River, which flows into the Rakaia River, this tranquil spot is perfect for a quick photo stop.
Castle Hill (1 hr) – Next, we head to the fascinating Castle Hill, where ancient limestone formations sit proudly on the rolling hills. Once submerged beneath the ocean, these rocks have been shaped over time into the unique structures you’ll see today. You might recognise this breathtaking landscape from films like The Lord of the Rings and Narnia. Climbers and boulderers flock here for adventure, but you’ll have time to explore this stunning area at your own pace.
Arthur's Pass Village (1 hr) – As we approach Arthur’s Pass, you’ll be treated to close-up views of the majestic Southern Alps. Once we arrive in the village, you can choose to walk the Devil’s Punch Bowl Track or explore the local shops and cafés.
Devil’s Punch Bowl – This one-hour walking track features a gentle incline and steps leading to a dramatic 131-metre waterfall. It’s a moderately easy walk, taking you through lush bush and forest with spectacular views of the waterfall.
Arthur’s Pass Village – If walking isn’t for you, take some time to relax with a coffee, enjoy a bite to eat, or shop for local treats in the village. It’s a great spot to learn more about the area and soak in the alpine atmosphere.
Otira Gorge Lookout (10 mins) – Also known as "Death’s Corner," this lookout offers a stunning view of the Otira Viaduct, a 440-metre-long engineering marvel that makes travel through Arthur’s Pass possible. Don’t forget to watch for the cheeky Kea, New Zealand’s playful alpine parrot. We then continue on to the charming town of Hokitika.
Greymouth (5 mins) – We’ll make a brief stop at the Greymouth Information Centre. Greymouth, the largest town on the West Coast, is nestled between rugged cliffs, wild beaches, and the scenic Grey Valley. While it’s a picturesque spot, it’s also a key hub for travellers connecting via the famous TranzAlpine train.
Cobden Breakwater (5 mins) – Just north of Greymouth, Cobden Breakwater offers stunning views of the waves crashing against the rocks. This spot is a paradise for photographers, with its rugged beauty providing the perfect backdrop for capturing dramatic shots.
Hokitika (1.5 hrs) – We then arrive in the laid-back town of Hokitika, where you can take a leisurely stroll along the wild, black-sand beach. Looking out over the Tasman Sea, you’ll be treated to views of the rugged surf and perhaps even spot a shipwreck. You may also have the chance to find a piece of greenstone along the shore. Our guides will give you plenty of time to explore this “cool little town” and all it has to offer.

Hokitika Gorge (1 hr) – For those seeking more adventure, join us on an excursion to Hokitika Gorge, a hidden treasure of the West Coast. Known for its vibrant turquoise waters and lush native bush, this spot is a favourite among nature lovers and photographers. After capturing some memorable shots, our driver will collect you as we continue to Franz Josef.
Lake Ianthe (5 mins) – Our journey includes a short stop at Lake Ianthe, a tranquil lake surrounded by hills and podocarp forests. This serene spot is home to various wetland birds, including the endangered Great Crested Grebe. The lake is set within a glacial trough, with its waters flowing into the Wanganui River.

Franz Josef Options – When we reach Franz Josef Village, you’ll have two options: either be dropped off at your accommodation or, if you prefer, embark on the Franz Josef Glacier walk first and be dropped off afterwards. Please let your driver know which option you choose.
Franz Josef Glacier (30 mins) – One of the few places in the world where glaciers meet rainforests, the West Coast’s Glacier Country offers a unique opportunity to witness this natural wonder. While direct access to the glacier face is not possible, you can take a short walk to a viewpoint to admire the glacier and learn more about its fascinating history.
Franz Josef – The quiet town of Franz Josef is a gem of New Zealand’s West Coast, offering a range of thrilling hikes with stunning views and unforgettable experiences. The highlight is the chance to get up close to the majestic glaciers, whether by exploring on foot or taking a scenic helicopter flight for a bird’s-eye view. It’s an adventure you won’t want to miss!
