South Island

Start: Queenstown
Duration: 1 day
Travel Time: 12 hours

The Doubtful Sound Cruise and Coach from Queenstown is a 12-hour full-day journey into remote Fiordland. The experience includes return coach travel to Manapouri, a cruise across Lake Manapouri, a coach journey over Wilmot Pass and a three-hour wildlife cruise through Pātea Doubtful Sound. The tour is suitable for all ages, although reasonable mobility is required for the multi-stage journey and floating-wharf access.

Travel Across Lake, Mountain and Fiord

The journey from Queenstown is an important part of the experience, travelling through Southland to the peaceful shores of Lake Manapouri. Cruise across the lake to West Arm before boarding a coach for the remote road over Wilmot Pass, where elevated viewpoints reveal rainforest-covered mountains and the waterways of Doubtful Sound. This isolated route provides access to a part of Fiordland that cannot be reached directly by public road.

At Deep Cove, board the Pātea Explorer for a three-hour cruise beneath towering cliffs, misty waterfalls and dense native rainforest. A specialist nature guide or experienced skipper shares stories about the region while helping passengers watch for bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and Fiordland crested penguins. With no Wi-Fi available in the fiord, the cruise offers a rare opportunity to disconnect and appreciate one of New Zealand’s quietest wilderness areas.

Explore Doubtful Sound’s Wild, Untouched Beauty

Upon reaching Deep Cove, step aboard the Patea Explorer for a three-hour cruise into the heart of Doubtful Sound. Surrounded by rainforest-clad cliffs, hidden inlets, and misty waterfalls, you’ll glide through waters so still they reflect the sky like glass.

A nature guide or expert skipper will be on hand to share fascinating stories, point out rare wildlife like dolphins, fur seals, and the elusive Fiordland crested penguin, and ensure your time on the water is as enriching as it is awe-inspiring. It’s a journey that’s as unforgettable as the destination itself.
