Explore the Volcanic Crater Rim, Coastal Trails and Historic Landmarks

Your full-day hiking experience begins with a scenic drive from Christchurch towards Sumner, a seaside suburb nestled beneath the Port Hills. Stop at a local café for a hot drink before continuing to Taylors Mistake Beach, where your guided walk begins. From here, follow coastal tracks along the ancient volcanic landscape of Banks Peninsula, with views stretching across Pegasus Bay, Lyttelton Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps can be seen in the distance. As you explore the ridgelines, your local guide explains how volcanic activity shaped the surrounding landscape and shares insights into the area's natural environment. The changing scenery offers opportunities to pause for photographs and enjoy the coastline from different viewpoints.

Beyond the coastal scenery, the Crater Rim Walk reveals fascinating stories from Canterbury's past. Along the trail, visit the remains of a Second World War coastal defence battery and discover an Antarctic cabin, reflecting Christchurch's longstanding connection with Antarctic exploration. Your guide brings these historic locations to life while leading you through native vegetation, open hillsides and rugged coastal terrain. Partway through the walk, take a break at a scenic spot to enjoy your included gourmet picnic lunch, surrounded by views of the peninsula. The guided walking portion lasts approximately 3–4 hours, including a 30-minute lunch break, allowing time to explore the landscape and its history without rushing. After completing the walk, return to Christchurch with your guide.
