Journey Through Queenstown’s Gold Rush Past

Set out on a thrilling 4WD adventure through Skippers Canyon, a place carved by hand into the cliffs of the Shotover River Valley. This legendary road, voted one of the world’s most scenic by the British Automobile Association, offers unmatched views and a glimpse into New Zealand’s pioneering spirit. Every twist and turn reveals rugged landscapes and stories from the country’s early gold rush days.

Your guide will take you deep into the canyon’s heritage, visiting the restored Skippers School, where historic photos and artefacts share the struggles and triumphs of miners and their families. Standing on the old Skippers suspension bridge, you’ll feel connected to the daring souls who once crossed here daily. The historic township, now mostly silent, still holds echoes of the vibrant community that once thrived in this remote valley.

Scenic Lookouts and Hands-On Gold Panning

As the 4WD winds towards Lighthouse Rock, the canyon opens up to reveal panoramic views of the entire valley — a perfect spot for unforgettable photos. From here, it’s easy to see why this route continues to captivate travellers and photographers alike. The surrounding cliffs, etched with history, tell tales of courage and endurance against nature’s extremes.

Before heading back to Queenstown, you’ll have the chance to try gold panning at Deep Creek, guided by experts who share traditional techniques from the region’s golden past. It’s a fun, hands-on experience that brings the history of the Shotover River to life. Whether you uncover a fleck of gold or simply enjoy the moment, the Skippers Canyon 4WD Gold Heritage Tour promises a journey rich in scenery, heritage, and adventure.
