Start: Queenstown
Travel Time: 4 hours
Difficulty: 2
Minimum Age: 12 Maximum Weight: 120kg

The Queenstown Half-Day Canyoning Adventure is a four-hour guided experience in a canyon near Queenstown, combining ziplining, waterfall abseiling and natural rock slides. Departures run four times daily from mid-October to April, at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Starting in at Queenstown Adventure Centre, the tour includes transfers, equipment and guiding. It suits beginners aged 12 and over with moderate fitness and confidence in moving water.

Explore Queenstown's Waterfalls, Natural Slides and Hidden Canyons

Your adventure begins at the Queenstown Adventure Centre, where you'll meet your guides before travelling to a purpose-built canyoning base. Here, you'll change into specialist wetsuits, boots and safety equipment before heading towards Queenstown Canyon. A short walk takes you through ancient native beech forest, where towering trees conceal a narrow gorge carved by flowing water. Beyond the forest, you'll discover high rock walls, waterfalls and clear natural pools. Your guides explain how to move safely through the canyon and prepare you for the challenges ahead. The setting is a striking contrast to Queenstown's busy lakefront, offering access to a secluded natural environment that can only be explored as part of a guided canyoning experience.

Once inside the canyon, the journey becomes a combination of climbing, scrambling, ziplining, abseiling and sliding through natural waterways. You'll travel between rock walls, descend beside waterfalls, glide along ziplines and navigate smooth chutes that lead into pools below. Some sections involve floating through narrow passages, while others offer opportunities to jump into the water. Your guides provide instructions throughout the experience and can offer alternative routes for different confidence levels. No previous canyoning experience is needed, although you should be comfortable around moving water and ready for a physically active adventure. After completing the canyon, return to the base for a hot shower, dry clothes and a hot drink before travelling back to Queenstown.
