Your Guided Kiwi Encounter at the National Kiwi Hatchery Rotorua

The National Kiwi Hatchery Tour Rotorua offers an up-close look at one of Aotearoa’s most important conservation initiatives. During this 60-minute guided experience, you’ll learn how kiwi eggs are incubated, hatched and raised in a purpose-built facility designed to give them the best possible start. Your guide will introduce you to interactive displays, behind-the-scenes insights and the specialist care that goes into protecting this treasured native species.

Guests step into the specially designed nocturnal house, where adult kiwi forage naturally in a darkened environment that mimics their wild habitat. Throughout the tour, knowledgeable hatchery staff share captivating stories, conservation challenges and the science behind saving kiwi. Visiting during hatching season (September–March) offers the chance to learn about eggs and chicks, while visits outside these months focus on adult kiwi behaviour and husbandry.
