Exploring New Zealand’s Easiest Great Ride

The Hauraki Rail Trail Cycling Tour is one of New Zealand’s most accessible and picturesque rides, making it a favourite for families, beginners, and seasoned cyclists alike. The easy grade 1-2 trail stretches across nearly 200km of gentle paths that pass through coastal wetlands, lush farmland, and fascinating historic railway corridors. With such a mix of landscapes, every section offers something new and memorable.

Starting just north of Thames, the journey takes you past the Shorebird Coast, through Paeroa, and onwards to Matamata, a town loved for its connection to Middle-earth. Riders can also enjoy the popular side trip between Paeroa and Waihi, where the Karangahake Gorge reveals tunnels, bridges, and relics of gold-mining history. Whether you’re after a short getaway or a longer adventure, the trail is flexible enough to fit your plans.
