Hauraki Rail Trail Cycling Tour

The Hauraki Rail Trail is divided into five sections, with distances ranging from 23km to 55km, giving you the flexibility to ride at your own pace. For a relaxed two-day adventure, you can comfortably cover two sections each day. If you prefer a more leisurely exploration, the tour can be extended up to four days, allowing ample time to fully enjoy each segment. How far you ride each day is entirely up to you—the choice is yours!

Section A: Journey from Kaiaua to Thames - 55km (5-6 hours)

Embark on a journey starting at Kaiaua in the North, tracing the steps of the early Māori settler, Te Aho. This part of the trail skirts the Firth of Thames’ edge, navigating over chenier shell banks, and meanders through globally significant wetlands. This area is a haven for migratory shorebirds, offering a unique chance to discover the region's avian treasures before venturing to the hides for an intimate viewing experience.

Section B: Thames to Paeroa - 34 km (3-4 hours)

Venture through a historically rich corridor, once navigable solely by the Waihou and Hikutaia rivers. Departing Thames township via the old railway, this trail unveils verdant farmland alongside the stunning vistas of the Hauraki Plains and the forest-clad Kaimai Ranges. A visit to the Cheese Barn at Matatoki is highly recommended. Continue to the Paeroa Historical Maritime Park, once the farthest inland port of New Zealand, and board the riverboat into town.

Section C: Paeroa to Waihi - 24 km (6-8 hours return)

Allocate two days to delve into the trail's most frequented stretch, which shadows the Ohinemuri River into the breathtaking Karangahake Gorge. This unique terrain showcases the tumbling Owharoa Falls, picturesque gold mining remnants, and the eerie Windows Walk. Bring a headlamp for the 1100-meter railway tunnel exploration, and don’t miss the nostalgic ride on the Goldfields Railway vintage train. Section D: Paeroa to Te Aroha - 23 km (2-3 hours)

This serene segment heads south through the verdant Waikato farmland, adorned with dairy cows and other farm animals. The journey offers splendid views of the Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges and Mt Te Aroha (952m, The Mountain of Love), overlooking the Hauraki Plains. Section E: Te Aroha to Matamata - 37 km (2-4 hours)

Enjoy the effortless stretch past diverse farms, including goat, dairy, and thoroughbred horse farms. Nearing Matamata, keep an eye out for the towering Wairere Falls, the North Island's tallest waterfall. The Firth Tower is a peaceful spot to appreciate the gardens and delve into the museum exhibits. The Hobbiton Movie Set is an essential visit for fans, offering tours, Hobbit-style feasts, or a relaxing drink at the Green Dragon Inn.
