Lake Dunstan, Roxburgh Gorge & Clutha Gold Cycle Tour

Cycle three of New Zealand’s most iconic trails on this five-day adventure through the Lake Dunstan, Roxburgh Gorge, and Clutha Gold Trails. Starting in Cromwell, ride past vineyards and into the dramatic Cromwell Gorge with its impressive boardwalks and swing bridges. From Clyde, explore the rugged beauty of the Roxburgh Gorge, complete with a scenic jet boat ride and glimpses of gold mining relics that tell stories of the region’s rich past.

The journey continues along the Clutha Gold Trail, following the Clutha River / Mata-au through fertile farmland and historic towns like Roxburgh and Lawrence. The final leg features native bush, wetlands, and a stunning lakeside boardwalk on the new extension to Waihola. With luggage transfers, comfortable accommodation and local transport all arranged, you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Trail Surface: Compacted Gravel

Cyclists should be confident riding on compacted gravel, some uneven surfaces and riding up and down switch-backs.

  • Trail Grading & Surface: Rated Introductory to Moderate. Trails include compacted gravel with some narrow, hilly, and remote sections, including switchbacks. Riders should be confident on uneven terrain.
  • Bike Suitability: E-bikes are suitable if used appropriately and charged properly. Mountain and low-step bikes are also available.
  • Children on the Trail: Lake Dunstan Trail is only suitable for children who are experienced riders. Trailers and tow bikes are not recommended due to trail conditions.
  • Accommodation Options: Comfort accommodation is included. Economy and superior upgrades can be requested, but availability is limited in remote areas.

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own bike, pedals, seat, or other components. Just let us know in advance so we can make the right arrangements.

Self-guided tours offer more flexibility and independence. You’ll need basic bike maintenance skills (like fixing a flat), a good sense of direction, and adaptability. The trails are well signposted, and we provide clear maps and booked accommodation. Most logistics are sorted before your arrival, but our team is always on hand if anything goes wrong.

Yes. New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, so we recommend packing waterproof outerwear and warm, quick-drying layers made of wool, polyester, or nylon. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and dries slowly. A full gear list is included in your pre-departure pack.
