Explore an Active Volcano with Expert Local Guides

Begin your Mount Tarawera & Kaituna Sledge Combo with a 4WD journey and guided hike to the summit of one of Rotorua’s most iconic volcanoes. Walk across rugged lava fields, peer into the volcanic crater, and hear stories of the 1886 eruption that changed the landscape forever. Your guide brings the history to life, blending Māori legend and natural science into every step.

The panoramic views from the summit are simply breathtaking, stretching across geothermal valleys and distant lakes. For those keen on an extra thrill, there’s even the chance to run into the crater itself. This is your chance to connect with a powerful part of Aotearoa’s living landscape.

Take Control on the Kaituna River’s Rapids

After the heights of Mount Tarawera, get down to river level for an adrenaline-pumping sledging session on the Kaituna. Unlike rafting, sledging puts you face-to-face with the rapids as you steer your own sledge, using flippers for propulsion. It’s a personal, fast-paced ride through foamy whitewater, native bush and swirling currents.

With professional guides by your side, this adventure is safe for first-timers yet thrilling enough for seasoned adventurers. You’ll navigate eddies, ride playholes and feel every twist of the river. It's a full-body thrill that finishes off a Rotorua day you’ll be talking about for years.
