- Fitness Level:
- Reasonable fitness is required; no prior hiking experience is necessary.
- Participants should be comfortable with moderate physical activity.
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing:
- This is an optional activity on Day 4 and is considered one of the best day walks in the world.
- The hike is 6–8 hours long, with an altitude gain of 900 m (3,000 ft) and descent of 1,250 m (4,100 ft). This makes it physically challenging but rewarding.
- General Trail Information:
- The hikes range from 1 hour to 8 hours depending on the day.
- Tracks are well-built, and the guides can suggest shorter or self-guided walks for those seeking less activity.
- Average driving time per day varies; some days involve little to no driving.
- Typical driving time is 2–3 hours per day, but occasionally longer.
- Driving time offers a chance to relax and enjoy New Zealand’s ever-changing scenery.
- Travel is in a luxury minibus towing a lockable trailer for food, equipment, and luggage.
- Routes include a mix of sealed and unsealed roads.
- Guides are happy to stop for photo opportunities, vineyards, or even notable ice cream shops!
