A Private Canoe Experience on the Whanganui River

This private canoe journey lets you experience one of New Zealand’s Great Walks from the water, with your own group and expert guides. Starting from Taumarunui and travelling to Ohinepane, the trip blends peaceful stretches of river with moments of excitement on the rapids. The mix of farmland, lush native forest, and rugged scenery makes this an unforgettable adventure.

Canadian canoes are perfectly suited for this section of the river, including the three largest rapids such as Ngaporo and Autapu. No previous canoeing experience is required, with full training provided on the day. This makes the tour safe, fun, and accessible for families, friends, and groups of all abilities.

Wilderness Scenery and Historic Highlights

The Whanganui River flows through a stunning landscape rich with both Māori and European history. From waterfalls cascading into sheer gorges to tranquil bush-lined stretches, every bend of the river reveals something new. A highlight is the famous Bridge to Nowhere, a poignant landmark that connects today’s journey with the stories of the past.

As you paddle, your private guides ensure the trip is tailored to suit your pace, fitness level, and preferences. Whether you want more time for photography, to soak in the history, or simply enjoy the thrill of the rapids, this personalised canoe adventure offers a unique way to experience the Whanganui National Park.
